On 30 May, the jubilee contemporary art fair ArtVilnius'19, which celebrates its tenth anniversary, will celebrate this beautiful anniversary more than just – the fair's special partner Lewben Group is also celebrating its tenth anniversary. On this occasion, the art foundation Lewben Art Foundation, established by the latter, will present an exclusive exposition "In Art We Trust" in the Litexpo project zone.
The exposition includes works of Christian iconography from the collection of the Lewben Art Foundation from the eighteenth century to contemporary works by world-famous artists. This year's exposition was prepared by a team of as many as five curators: Ugnė Bužinskaitė, Francesca Ferrarini, Vilius Kavaliauskas, Virginijus Kinčinaitis and Sigita Maslauskaitė. Collector, Chairman of the Board of Lewben Group and Lewben Art Foundation V. Kavaliauskas found himself in the ranks of curators for the first time: "This is a direction that has been developed and accumulated in the collection for many years, so it is very personal to me. We have been waiting for a special opportunity to show it to the public for a long time, so the ten-year anniversary is perfect for this," says V. Kavaliauskas about the exposition.
"We have been cooperating with the contemporary art fair ArtVilnius for the sixth year, and this time among the works of such world-famous artists as Andres Serrano or Jake and Dina Chapman, we will also present works by Lithuanian contemporary artists that have not been shown anywhere before: a painting by Adomas Danusevičius, a work by Patrizia Jurkšaitytė coming directly from the workshop to the exhibition, or an impressively sized canvas by Andrius Zakarauskas," says Indrė Tubinienė, director of the Lewben Art Foundation. A dialogue with contemporary works will be created by paintings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries exhibited nearby. The architects who created the exposition "IMPLMNT architects" sought to strengthen the impression and dialogue through the exclusive architecture of the exposition, which interprets the plan of the traditional cruciform church.
According to one of the curators of the exhibition, S. Maslauskaitė, religious art has recently been going through a time of going public: discussions, exhibitions, and scientific research have intensified. The importance of religious art is loudly evidenced by the recent fires, as well as this exposition in the context of ArtVilnius'19.
The exposition "In Art We Trust" will be accompanied by the discussion "Creative Dilemma: Art, Christianity, Today", which will take place on June 1 at 2 p.m. at Litexpo. The discussion will be attended by the director of the Church Heritage Museum S. Maslauskaitė, art critic V. Kinčinaitis, painter A. Zakarauskas, curator of the Lewben Art Foundation U. Bužinskaitė, and the discussion will be moderated by art critic L. Kreivytė.
