In 1857, archaeologist, ethnographer, collector, member of the Vilnius Provisional Archaeology Commission and one of the founders of the Vilnius Museum of Antiquities Konstanty Tyszkiewicz (1806–1868) organized an expedition on the river Neris from its beginning to its confluence with Nemunas. In the expedition, he counted the shoals, measured the depth and width of the riverbed, collected material about the archaeological monuments on the banks of the river, and wrote down local folklore. The material he collected was published in the book River Neris and its Banks. After Tyszkiewicz’s death, the work was edited and published by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. This is the first edition.
