The composition entitled Trees depicts a fragment of Palermo: it encodes tensity in the upper right corner of the composition by using tree branches, their shadows, and the red glow of the setting sun, all of which form a surreal image of a white otherworldly being. The bulk of the painting, however, depicts a natural landscape in a very realistic manner and it does not seem that it is attempting to go beyond its borders of realism.
