Exhibition "Lithuanian Art Society –
110", dedicated to the memory of the first Lithuanian art exhibitions, 15
September – 15 November 2017, M. K. Čiurlionis House, Vilnius;
15 September 1907 (in the old style – 2
September) The Lithuanian Art Society was established in Vilnius. The gathering
of Lithuanian artists was not only a particularly important impetus for M. K.
Čiurlionis to finally decide to settle in Vilnius, but also an extremely
significant phenomenon in creating the identity of the modern Lithuanian
nation, awakening the cultural self-awareness of Lithuanians and aspirations
for statehood. M. K. Čiurlionis was actively involved in the Lithuanian
Artists' Movement from the very first steps of this movement: he participated
in the first Lithuanian art exhibition, organized the second exhibition
himself, created the statutes of the Lithuanian Art Society, designed its
activities, initiated the Musicians' Section at the Society, actively developed
the project of the House of the Nation, and was the first to promise to donate
his works to the Lithuanian Art Museum. The Čiurlionis Company of the
Lithuanian Art Society has been very deserving of the purchase and preservation
of the artist's legacy by Lithuania.
The Čiurlionis House, in cooperation with
the Lithuanian Art Museum, the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum, the
Lithuanian Literature and Art Archive, the collector Dr. Jaunius Gumbis, the M.
and J. Šlapeliai House-Museum, will present to the audience the paintings of M.
K. Čiurlionis, A. Žmuidzinavičius, K. Stabrowski, P. Kalpokas, A. Jaroševičius,
T. Daugirdas, A. Staneika, K. Šklėrius, as well as unique historical documents
that allow a more comprehensive understanding,
what cultural goals and objectives they set for themselves, what
publications were prepared by the Society, which exhibited its exhibitions not
only in Vilnius, but also outside Lithuania.
The exhibition, which can be visited from
15 September to 15 November, will be accompanied by exceptional cultural events
that will open up special pages of history for Vilnius residents, as well as
colour the events of a century ago with modern colours.
On the opening evening of the exhibition,
on September 14, at 6:00 p.m., the audience will be presented for the first
time with a song for voice and piano "Simostė angelėliai" (The
Angels), which has been newly deciphered from the manuscripts of M. K.
Čiurlionis and prepared for performance. It and other vocal works will be sung
by soprano Ona Kolobovaitė, and pianist Justas Šervenikas will play.
