I. Šlapelis was an artist of profound interests. He entered the Kaunas Theological Seminary but left it to study at the Cracow Academy of Art. Afterwards, he studied philosophy and the history of art in France and Italy. In 1922–1924 he was director of the M. K. Čiurlionis Gallery and in 1929–1940 – director of the Kaunas School of Art. I. Šlapelis is better known as a historian and critic of art as his paintings are not so numerous. He painted mostly realistic landscapes in the 1920s and did not develop his own artistic style.
