Czesław Znamierowski, a painter, was born on 23 M ay 1890 in Z atišje, in the Ludza region of Latvia. He attended drawing classes given by the Society for the Promotion of the Arts in St Petersburg between 1912 and 1914, and from 1915 to 1917 he studied at the Art College in St Petersburg. Between 1926 and 1929 he attended classes in the Art Department at Stephen Bathory University in Vilnius. He began to participate in exhibitions in 1920. He was a member of the Warsaw Zachęty Art Society (Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych w Warszawie), and one of the organisers of the Vilnius Independent Painters’ Association, and participated in their exhibitions in Vilnius and Warsaw. He painted landscapes, portraits and still lifes. He died on 9 August 1977 in Vilnius.
