The two volume historiographic work Diocese of Samogitia by the Bishop of Samogitia Motiejus Valančius (1801–1875) tells the story of the diocese from its foundation in 1413 to 1841. The work is of great importance to Lithuanian culture as it demonstrates the need to reflect on the past even in mid 19th century, and shows that the higher clergy felt the necessity to have a written history of its diocese. Other clergymen are also known to have written the history of the diocese of Samogitia  Canon Stanislaw Czerski, Prelate Benedykt Smigielski, and Canon Vincentas Juzumas. Based on primary historical sources, Valančius’ Diocese of Samogitia remains a valuable work to this day.
