The almost spherical poppies resemble the roundness of the bowl and the white linen doily under it, decorated with richelieu embroidery (after the famous 17thcentury French cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu, who liked to embroider). The background of the picture is neutral drapery, the blue of which brings out the soft rosiness of the delicate petals. CZESLAW ZNAMIEROWSKI (1890–1977) liked flowers very much. From early spring to late autumn, his garden near the gates into the Sapiega Park on Antakalnis Street in Vilnius was bursting with flowers. The artist shared the beauty of his flowers with passers-by, and aspired to preserve their beauty for the future in his pictures.
