Historian, educator, and initiator of the Lithuanian National Revival Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864) wrote the first book on Lithuanian history in Lithuanian - The Deeds of the Ancient Lithuanians and Samogitians (1822) and the first book on Lithuanian cultural history - The Character of the Ancient Lithuanians, Highlanders and Samogitians (1845). He collected and published folklore, wrote Polish-Lithuanian and Latin-Lithuanian dictionaries, and prepared historical Lithuanian documents for publication. Daukantas’ two part History of Lithuania was published posthumously in the Juozas J. Paukštys’ Printing House in Plymouth (also known as Vienybės lietuvninkų Printing House). The printing house was founded by Juozas Paukštys and A. Pajaujis in 1886. In 1897, it was taken over by Kazys Brazys, Tomas Paukštys, and Juozas J. Paukštys.
