Antanas Smetona (1874–1944) was a well known figure in the fields of government, culture, and public life, lawyer, Signatory of the February 16th Act of Independence in 1918, and President of the Republic of Lithuania (04/04/1919 to 19/06/1920 and 19/12/1926 to 15/06/1940). Smetona’s articles and speeches that appeared in the press in 1930-1931 were collected and published in a four volume book Raštai (Writings). Said and Written, 1927-1934 is a collection of the speeches the president gave on various occasions, published in 1935 and illustrated by artist Adomas Varnas (1879–1979). The book was published by the public company Pažanga, which published and distributed Lithuanian press. It operated in 1928-1940 in Kaunas.

2nd: Autograph of the President of the Republic of Lithuania Antanas Smetona for Jonas Budrys, 1935. Jonas Budrys (until 1923 Polovinskas; 1889–1964) was a Lithuanian politician, diplomat, one of the organisers of the 1923 uprising in Klaipėda, and governor of Klaipėda. He was the Head of the Lithuanian counterintelligence and Consul General in Königsberg and later New York.
